Marta Sztabińska
polish visual artist
.
My work explores reconnecting to local nature, feminism, craft, body and community. Through textile, illustration and photography, I aim to find ways and practices to heal human (more specifically: European, Western) connection to nature which is so deeply hurt by colonialism.
I draw inspiration from writers like Robin Wall Kimmerer and Amitav Ghosh, but also from intimate, embodied experiences like walking through the forest with my younger sister, drawing based on observation and using my body to notice the ecosystem communities by gently using my senses. Touching, smelling, listening, looking, feeling
These influences inform my use of colours, high-contrast visuals and slow paced, mending techniques - like crochetMy creative process involves a mix of intuition, hands-on testing and deep literature research, which results in personal, intimate bodies of work.
Ultimately, my work is a reflection of my passion for trying to understand and learn from beings very different from me. I hope it encourages viewers to see themselves in every being, human or not, but also spark a livelong curiosity and respect for the world that surrounds us.
